GAINESVILLE -- The North Hall girls soccer team broke through a tense, defensive battle with 3:25 remaining in overtime to take a 1-0 victory of White County and clinch the Northeast Georgia Mountains Cup on Saturday in Gainesville.
Kelsey Underwood provided the late heroics, connecting on an Alex Lawson cross to convert the game's only goal.
The game was dominated by defense throughout regulation as goalkeepers Melody Driscoll of White County and Alden Powell of North Hall, combined to keep both teams off the scoreboard.
Both teams took turns applying offensive pressure only to be turned away.
THIRD PLACE: WEST HALL GIRLS 4, CHESTATEE 1
The Spartans hit Chestatee with two late first half goals to create enough breathing room en route to the win in Gainesville.
West Hall struck in the first five minutes off a goal by Alyssa Hall. Chestatee’s Sadie Foote answered with 12:03 remaining to tie the game at 1-1. But Daniela Cervantes and Katie Forrester struck to make it 3-1 at the half. Gabrielle Ligas added the fourth goal for West Hall on penalty kick.
CONSOLATION: FANNIN COUNTY GIRLS 2, LAKEVIEW 0
Fannin County scored two goals in the second half to break a scoreless first half. Bethany Deal converted a penalty kick at the 26th minute. Lakeview countered with several shots from Emma Reinhardt and Carla Kenny, but Rebels goalkeeper Hope Cochran shut down the attack. Fannin’s Lindsey Humphrey secured the game with a breakaway goal with 2:30 remaining.
