CLARKESVILLE – An undercover drug operation yielded a major haul of marijuana on Wednesday.
According to Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell, special agents of the Mountain Judicial Circuit Narcotics Criminal Investigation and Suppression Team, with the assistance of deputies and a K-9 unit from the Habersham County Sheriff’s office, executed a search warrant at 287 W. Water St., Clarkesville.
Seized during the search were 22 pounds of marijuana, with a street value of $99,000. Also seized was an undetermined amount of cash.
"This search warrant was the latest development in an NCIS Team-led, three-month, multi-agency narcotics investigation involving the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office, Stephens County Sheriff’s Office, the National Guard Counter Drug Task Force, and Toccoa Police Department," Terrell said.
Ethridge Sovato Russell, 38, of Clarkesville, and Mikal Andrus Russell, 33, of Toccoa were arrested as a result of the investigation. Both are charged with trafficking marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and transaction of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of government housing.
Both men remained in the Habersham County Detention Center as of noon Thursday.
The investigation is ongoing.
