In 1976 the Gainesville Rotary Club named Johnson its Man-of-the-Year, and the city of Gainesville honored him with a “Charlie Johnson Day" proclamation. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Gainesville where he served as organist from 1953 to 1993. With Choral Director David Johnson he co-founded the Gainesville Chorale and was accompanist for that group for many years.
