U.S. Rep. Doug Collins
WASHINGTON – 9th District Congressman Doug Collins says President Obama "should be ashamed of himself" for the release of detained illegal immigrants from detention centers around the country in advance of budget cuts scheduled to take effect Friday.

A White House spokesman said Wednesday the President was unaware of the action.

Nevertheless, Collins, a Gainesville Republican, said “Unfortunately, this type of dangerous behavior has become the status quo from President Obama. It’s disheartening to know the leader of the greatest country in the world would rather play futile political games to advance his tax and spend agenda than protect innocent Americans."

Collins went on to say that these actions are "cowardly and careless, and moreover, they undermine the work the House Judiciary Committee is doing in regards to immigration reform. President Obama should be ashamed of himself for choosing political expediency over the safety of the American people.”

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Wednesday that the decision to release the immigrants was made without any input from the White House. He described the immigrants as "low-risk, non-criminal detainees." Carney said the decision to release what he described as "a few hundred" of the 30,000 illegal immigrants in federal detention was made by "career officials" at the immigration agency. He said the immigrants who were released were still subject to deportation.

"All of these individuals remain in removal proceedings," Carney said. "Priority for detention remains on serious criminal offenders and other individuals who pose a significant threat to public safety."
