CUMMING - Eleven Forsyth County sheriff's deputies who lost their jobs with the recent reorganization of the sheriff's office have hired a lawyer with the hope of being reinstated.

Newly installed Sheriff Duane K. Piper announced the realignment of the department last week, and part of the restructuring included the elimination of 11 middle management positions. (See link to related story below.)

Attorney Lance Lorusso told Channel 2 News in Atlanta that his clients are the victims of age discrimination. Lorusso said all of his clients, with the exception of two, are over the age of 40; the other two will turn 40 in the next few months.

Lorusso also said the veteran officers were fired the same day Sheriff Piper hired 11 entry-level deputies, including the sheriff's own son.

Piper told the television station that his son will work for the department. He also told the reporter that the reorganization of the department was done primarily for budgetary reasons. He said the changes will save the citizens of Forsyth County close to $1 million.

Lorusso presented Piper with a letter outlining the deputies' grievances last Friday, according to the TV report. He said the sheriff has seven days to respond before Lorusso proceeds to court with the complaints.
