Church gun giveaway attracts Atlanta media attention
OAKWOOD - No doubt there's been plenty of talk about guns in church, so that might have been what piqued the interest of an Atlanta TV station that showed up Sunday night for an event at Blackshear Place Baptist Church in south Hall County.
Pastor of Men's Ministries Sterling Lynn said a Fox 5 reporter showed up at the onset of the church's "Man Church" event becaused the reporter said she had never heard of a church giving away a gun.
"This is actually not our first time [to give away a gun]," said Lynn. "We have large sportsmen's feasts, is what we call them, that we give several guns away, and in fact, there are a number of churches in our area that do the very same thing."
Lynn said the Sunday night event was a kick-off for a five week men's Bible study that starts the morning of Tuesday, February 26. He said they counted 525 men, young and old, at the event Sunday.
He said once Fox 5 arrived and asked a few questions, they realized the event was not about giving away a weapon.
"While the interest may have been on the gun at first, I think they understood quickly that the event was not about the gun. The event was about men growing closer to God," said Lynn.
Lynn said the Bible study is open to any men in the community, by the way, and it takes place on Tuesday mornings before the work day begins.
"We're actually starting early this Tuesday at 5:45 because we're offering free Chick-Fil-A biscuits," said Lynn. "Our session will start at 6:15 and we'll be done at 7."
As far as more media attention, Lynn said he doesn't expect any TV cameras.
"We're grateful that they [Fox 5] didn't turn it [the news feature] into something what some media outlets may have made it, but made it into what it really was about...men and church."
