AUBURN - A woman was alert and talking to railroad workers after she was hit by a train in Auburn Thursday afternoon.

According to Auburn Police, it happened around 3:10 p.m. in the area of Georgia State Route 8 and Highway 324.

According to Sgt. Diana Campbell, the woman was stabilized by Barrow County first responders and flown to Grady Hospital in Atlanta.

Authorities don't yet know why the woman was in the area of the tracks. They're continuing an investigation.

Campbell said an observant CSX engineer saw the trouble ahead and was able to quickly deploy brakes on the train.
