JHS sending 7 students to SkillsUSA competition

CLARKESVILLE - “This room is filled with champions because you have prepared yourself for success,” said North Georgia Technical College (NGTC) President Dr. Gail Thaxton as she welcomed more than 300 students to the recent SkillsUSA Region 2 High School Competition at NGTC.

Those who placed first or second in their contest will advance to the Georgia SkillsUSA Conference at the Georgia International Convention Center held March 21-23.

SkillsUSA Region 2 includes counties from Oglethorpe to Union and from Dawson to Hart. SkillsUSA is a national career and technical student organization and each year a series of over 100 competitions allow students to test their skills. The theme for this year is “Champions at Work: Prepared with the skills America needs.”

Johnson High School (jhs) students placing first in their events included Harrison Caston in Advertising Design, Adam Holland in Carpentry, Grayson Anthony in Graphic Communications, Jacob Holland in Masonry, Peter Adams in Photography, Cory Hopkins in Plumbing, and Luis Martinez in Residential Wiring. Karina Rodriquez placed third in Prepared Speech. Also attending for Johnson High School were Eddy Gandarilla in Cabinet Making and Luis Del Toro in Welding.

“As a high school student in Stephens County, I came to this competition here at North Georgia Tech,” said SkillsUSA State Director Ashley Brown, a Toccoa native. “Though I didn’t win the first year, I tried a new event and was successful. I encourage all of you, whether you win today or not, to continue to participate in SkillsUSA.” Region 2 SkillsUSA coordinators includeD Jeff Bearinger from Lumpkin County High School, Chairperson Michael Hayes from Union County High School, Baker Pulliam from Chestatee High School, and Morris Harrison from North Georgia Technical College.
