LOGANVILLE -- The Johnson boys basketball team picked up a 63-34 victory on Tuesday at Walnut Grove, moving one step closer to the No. 1 seed for the upcoming 8-AAAA tournament.
The Knights must defeat Eastside on Thursday in Oakwood to finish as 8-AAAA No. 1.
Walnut Grove attempted to play a slow-down game on Tuesday and held a 2-0 lead through the first four minutes of the game before the Knights closed the quarter on a 10-2 run. Johnson outscored the Warriors 17-5 in the second quarter for a 27-9 lead at the half.
The Knights came out hot after halftime, outscoring Walnut Grove 25-10 for a 52-19 lead headed into the fourth.
Johnson (20-4, 7-0 Region 8-AAAA) was led by Montrell McKenzie with 24 points and 12 rebounds in three quarters of work. Ty Cockfield added 14 points and 7 assists in three quarters, and Carter Cagle scored nine, all in the first half.
Walnut Grove was led by Tyreck Jones with nine points.
