Lady Saints fall to No. 3 Clayton State
By staff reports
DAHLONEGA -– The Clayton State University women showed that they are certainly deserving of being ranked No. 3 in the nation on Saturday night as the University of North Georgia women's basketball team was unable to keep up with the quick-paced, high-scoring Lakers. The Saints ultimately fell 88-56 to the 2011 National Champions on Homecoming inside Memorial Hall Gymnasium.
The loss drops the Saints to 7-10 for the year and 5-5 in Peach Belt Conference play while the Lakers used the 32-point win to improve to 18-0 and 11-0 in league action.
North Georgia was led by a trio of players in double-digit scoring including Jaymee Carnes with 17 points, Mimi Hill with 11 and Keeley Chester with 10. Carnes secured another double-double with 10 rebounds, all off the defensive glass, after being held to just eight points in the first half. Hill scored five of her points at the charity stripe while Chester had four free throws.
The Saints shot 39.5% (17-43) from the field in the game, but 23 turnovers marred the Saints' progress as Clayton State turned them into 33 points. North Georgia was also out-rebounded 40-31 and gave up 20 second chance points to the Lakers.
The Lakers, which finished the game shooting 45.6% (31-68) as a team, were led by Keona Dixon's 23 points off a 7-10 performance from the field which included going 5-8 from three-point range.
Behind Dixon, Drameka Griggs, Clayton State's leading scorer on the season, scored 16 points while Kayla Mobley finished with 15 and Shacamra Jackson and Bena Howard each ended the 40 minutes with 11.
The Lakers led from the opening tip all the way to the final buzzer, including an 11-2 run in the opening three and a half minutes of play. By halftime, the Lakers held a 49-25 lead.
North Georgia closed out a four-game home stand with a 2-2 record. The Saints will now hit the road for three straight conference games to close out January and open the month of February.
