ATLANTA (AP) -- Some schools are closed today as a blast of winter weather approaches north Georgia, bringing the potential for some ice and sleet.

Northeast Georgia still appears to be under the greatest threat of ice-coated roads, trees and power lines. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning yesterday afternoon for 10 counties in northeast Georgia, where up to a quarter of an inch of ice was possible. (See separate stories.) The area includes the cities of Cleveland, Cumming, Dahlonega, Gainesville and Blairsville.

Several school systems announced before dawn Friday that they would be closed for the day. In fact, some announced as early as late yesterday afternoon that they would be closed or have a delayed opening. (See separate posting.) They included Forsyth and Hall County schools.

Most of the Atlanta metro area and northwest Georgia were under a freezing rain advisory through 1 p.m. Friday.
