GAINESVILLE – Gainesville Police are continuing their investigation into a pair of purse robberies that happened last week within a short distance of each other on Central Avenue.

According to spokesman Corporal Kevin Holbrook the first occurred around 3:30 Friday afternoon.

“A female walking down Central Avenue was approached from behind,” Holbrook said, “by a male…who possibly did brandish a weapon…demanding her purse.”

Holbrook said that when she complied the suspect turned and ran away with her purse. As a result the woman’s description of the robber, according to Holbrook, was minimal.

The second robbery happened the next day (Saturday), also on Central Avenue, just past noon.

This time, according to Holbrook, “two black males approached a female who walking along Central Avenue." The twosome was driving a white SUV.

“One of the black males exited the SUV…displayed a weapon to the female and demanded her purse.”

Holbrook said that investigators are looking to see if the two robberies are related.

”There are very close similarities in the cases; however, we do have different descriptions. Fortunately, in both episodes nobody was hurt.”

Holbrook asked that anyone with information on either robbery to please call Gainesville Police.
