GAINESVILLE – The movie "Ten," starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, concluded filming scenes on Lake Lanier in Hall County earlier this month and is now in post production, preparing for what is scheduled to be a January 2014 debut.
The movie, which was budgeted for about $40 million, is about a group of former Navy Seals turned mercenaries who rob a drug cartel’s safe house, a mansion located on the shores of Lake Lanier.
It is the latest in a growing number of films and TV programs filmed in north Georgia.
The state has become popular with Hollywood movie producers and television film crews because of the Film, Music and Digital Entertainment Tax Credit of 30 percent as well as a broad network of production and recording facilities, talented workforce and technology support services.
Hall County has become popular due to its close proximity to Atlanta and its diverse landscape, featuring panoramic shorelines, mountains, farmland and quaint downtown area, according to Stacey Dickson, president of the Lake Lanier Convention and Visitors Bureau.
“Our proximity to Atlanta is definitely the number one attraction,” she said. “All the workers that are the nuts and bolts of the projects are there, the technical experts and camera crews.”
Dickson said it is hard to estimate the economic impact movies like "Ten" have on the area.
“They did have private lease agreements with property holders and facilities like parking lots while they were here,” Dickson said. “They also leased one of the Corps of Engineers parks and there was some nominal fees involved there. So that is money that would not have come into the area if they had filmed elsewhere. “
Dickson said Extras Casting Atlanta helped to gather extras for different film projects. She recommended that anyone interested in working as an extra contact them. “They have postings just about every day of opportunities,” she said.
