GAINESVILLE - A 62 year old Hall County man faces charges for allegedly firing gunshots at Jackson EMC workers trying to restore power in his area.
Donald Josh Deal is charged with two counts of aggravated assault for the incident on Holland Drive off Brown's Bridge Road, according to Hall County Sheriff's Sgt. Stephen Wilbanks.
"The occupant stepped outside in an agitated fashion and began cursing and threatening them with a handgun, before firing at least two shots in their direction," Wilbanks said.
Wilbanks said no one was hurt. The utility workers fled and called 911.
Deal allegedly went back inside his home and refused to come out. Sheriff's office SWAT commanders convinced Deal, by telephone, to surrender around 2:00 a.m. Wednesday. It all started around midnight, according to Wilbanks.
"Mr. Deal did appear to be intoxicated at the time of the incident," Wilbanks said.
The overnight situation caused added concern in the wake of the recent shooting of four firefighters in New York as they responded to a call.
"Workers such as this are out there trying to get power restored, trying to help people and do a good thing. Then they're assaulted by an individual such as this. It causes a great deal of concern," Wilbanks said.
Deal was booked into the Hall County Jail. Wilbanks said bond had not been set, pending Deal's first court appearance.
