Big sendoff planned for GHS football team

GAINESVILLE - As the Gainesville High School Red Elephants prepare for the State AAAAA Football Championship game this Friday night, city school officials are organizing a big sendoff for the team.

According to a press release from Gainesville City Schools, every school in the system will participate as the team buses wind their way through city streets before they head to the Georgia Dome in Atlanta for the game.

The schedule for the sendoff is as follows:

•Team buses leave GHS at 1:20 p.m. after GHS salute
•Buses circle Century Place to Wood’s Mill Road for Centennial Arts Academy salute 1:25-1:30 p.m.
•Buses travel NE on Oak Street for Fair Street, Wood’s Mill, and Central Office salute 1:30–1:35 p.m.
•Buses travel down Green Street where community supporters are invited to participate 1:35-1:40 p.m.
•Buses travel to Riverside Drive by Bobby Gruhn Field where Gainesville Exploration will gather to give their salute 1:40-1:45 p.m.
•Buses will travel down Riverside Drive to Enota Avenue and turn right for Enota to give their salute 1:45-1:50 p.m.
•Buses will travel SE on South Enota to intersection of Jesse Jewell Parkway; turn left 1:50-1:53 p.m.
•Buses will travel Jesse Jewell where New Holland and Gainesville Middle School will give their salute 1:55-2:00 p.m.

School officials say alumni, team supporters and community members are invited to join students, faculty and staff as they salute the team.

A charter bus will also be available to take fans to the game. Seats are $20 each. The bus will board passengers at 2:30 p.m. and depart the school at 3 p.m.
