MORROW -– The North Georgia College & State University women’s basketball team ended its three-game skid Sunday afternoon. The Saints picked up a 55-41 win over Chowan University to close out their time in the Loch Shop Classic hosted by No. 5 Clayton State University.

The Saints (2-4) never trailed the Hawks (0-6) in the contest and led by as many as 20.

Neither team shot particularly well from the field; North Georgia went 17-55 (.309) from the field compared to a 14-58 performance by Chowan. Both teams shot less than 30% from three-point range, but the Saints’ 80% performance (16-20) from the free throw line proved to be the difference maker as the Hawks could only manage an 11-18 (.611) outing from the line.

Jaymee Carnes recorded her first double-double of the season, ending the 40 minutes with 22 points and 12 rebounds in the 14-point win. Carnes went 6-17 from the field with two free throws and also went 8-10 from the charity stripe.

Stephanie Huffman ended the game as North Georgia’s second-leading scorer with eight points while Keeley Chester recorded three of North Georgia’s five blocks.

Janelle Murphy was the only other player on either team to record double-digit points as she had 13 off a 6-15 performance from the field.

Molly Rainwater started the game off with two three-pointers within 24 seconds of each other to give North Georgia a 6-0 lead, but she would not score the rest of the game. The six points spurred an opening 11-1 drive by the Saints through the first five minutes of play.

Chowan struggled to keep the game close, but North Georgia took a 28-17 lead into halftime and the second half proved to be much of the same as the Saints flirted with a 20-point lead for much of the second half before settling for the 14-point victory.

North Georgia has one final out of conference game this season before diving into Peach Belt Conference play. The Saints will face Carson-Newman College in a rematch on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. in Jefferson City, Tenn. The two programs opened North Georgia’s season on Nov. 16 with the Eagles leaving Memorial Hall Gymnasium with a 78-66 victory.
