GAINESVILLE - A proposed change in the rates for South Hall sewer brought two points of view at Tuesday's Hall County Commission work session.

Right now residential customers pay a flat rate, $42 a month, for sewer. Public Works Director Ken Reardon said new rates should make customers happy.

“Our new rate proposal is to reduce annual sewer bills to about 58 percent of the households on the system,” Rearden said.

Homeowner Dick Lahr was not happy, hoping commissioners take another look at the numbers.

“These numbers just don’t correlate,” Larr said. “They just don’t come together.”

The rate resolution comes up again at Thursday's voting meeting.
Hall County commissioners are also considering three options to provide sewer to the northeast part of the county. Rearden outlined the options during Tuesday’s called work session.

“It’s whether the county wants to get into the sewer business or do they want Gainesville to operate our system in North Hall,” Rearden said.

The Gainesville option requires the county to deed its sewer lines in the Highway 365 Industrial Park to the city. The third option is a county built treatment plant where the county could collect all the revenue.

FORECLOSURE REGISTRY NEEDED

Hall County Commissioner Craig Lutz is calling for a property registry to list foreclosed homes that could be improved under the county's Neighborhood Stabilization Program. Lutz said banks are holding onto the foreclosures and not maintaining them.

“We want to make sure we are in a position to maximize the opportunities that have been given to us,” Lutz said.

Lutz added the county could lose a million dollar renovation grant if it is unable to renovate the houses; the registry would help identify the properties.
