Coroner identifies White County fire victim
By Dean Dyer Staff
CLEVELAND – White County Coroner Ricky Barrett has identified the woman who died in a house fire north of Cleveland Saturday night as 62-year-old Joanie Menten of Sautee.
Barrett released the name Sunday night, following confirmation of her identity by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation State Crime Lab in Decatur.
White County Fire Chief Dickie Howard said fire and EMS personnel were dispatched at 10:40 p.m. to a residence on Joe Black Road north of Cleveland. The home was in the area of Pilgrim Road.
Howard said the approximately 900-square-foot structure was fully involved by fire when units arrived.
Neighbors advised firefighters that someone was inside the home, Howard said.
“They said they saw her there earlier and her car was still in the driveway,” Howard said.
Firefighters had a knockdown of the fire quickly, and Howard said the victim was located.
Howard said the fire remains under investigation by the county fire investigator and White County Sheriff’s Office.
Helen and Cleveland fire units, along with White County Station 3 (Sautee-Nacoochee) volunteers and the Lee Arrendale State Prison Fire Team from Alto, responded.
