Bulldogs oust defending champ Grayson
By staff reports
LOGANVILLE – Michael D’Angola booted four field goals and Nate Brown caught one touchdown pass and threw another to lead North Gwinnett to a 28-10 upset win over defending state champion Grayson Friday night in the second round of the Class AAAAAA playoffs.
The Bulldogs (11-1) never trailed and did allow the Rams to score a touchdown until the fourth quarter when the game was not in doubt. They led 6-0 after the first quarter on a pair D’Angola field goals and 9-3 at halftime.
Grayson (10-2) came into the game averaging 41.5 points a game but could get nothing going against a North Gwinnett defense that has gotten stingy in the playoffs. The Bulldogs had allowed nearly 18 points a game but in the playoffs they are yielding just 14.5 points, mostly against reserves.
Bulldogs’ running back Cam Lewis had a big day for North Gwinnett rushing for 120 yards and catching four passes for 42 yards. Quarterback Michael Haynes was 11-of-18 for 99 yards and one touchdown, on a nice strike to Brown.
On a double reverse, Brown would connect with Caleb Scott for a long TD pass. Brown earlier had caught a TD pass on a throw from Haynes. D’Angola connected on field goals of 35, 30, 38, and 30 for the Bulldogs.
North Gwinnett will again hit the road next week in the quarterfinals traveling to Lovejoy (11-1) which advanced with a 36-15 win over Marietta.
