GAINESVILLE - Even though there’s no perfect definition for it, the word “sustainability” comes up in a lot of media nowadays. In short, it means preserving quality of life and ensuring that those who come after us still have a livable world.

A new series of monthly talks titled “Sense and Sustainability”, free and open to the public, is starting at Brenau University on Tuesday from 5 to 6 p.m. in the SUB (second floor of the Tea Room). Local experts, Brenau faculty and selected students will present a different topic each month.

The opening talk will touch on past environmental disasters such as Chernobyl and Love Canal. Closer to home, problems of development and water supply are evident. Acts of Nature, such as tornadoes, hurricanes, floods and even earthquakes, have also affected the Gainesville area.

The opening talk, followed by time for questions, will be presented by Dr. Rudi Kiefer, who is a professor of science and director of sustainability at Brenau.

The event is sponsored by the Rho Eta chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority at Brenau University.
