BRASELTON - A traffic shift and the opening of two turning lanes are planned Thursday on the State Route 211/State Route 124 intersection improvement project in Braselton.

Traffic using SR 211 will be shifted to use the new asphalt allowing contractors to remove the original roadway and rebuild that part of the intersection. Once the traffic shift is in place Thursday mid-afternoon, a new left turn lane from SR 211 east onto SR 124 north and a new left turn lane from SR 211 east onto I-85 northbound will be open for use.

“Opening these new left turn lanes will greatly improve traffic in the area especially in the morning for commuters," according to Harold Mull, DOT District Construction Engineer. "We thank you for your patience as we work through the growing pains of roadway construction. One the project is finished traffic flow will be greatly improved.”

If the weather does not allow for the shift to occur Thursday, it will be rescheduled for next week.

The intersection improvement project underway now will build right and left turn lanes on each leg of the intersection. Dual left turn lanes will be built on SR 124 east towards the interstate and on SR 211 south towards Braselton. Two through lanes and sidewalks will be build for SR 211 and SR 124. New signal equipment will be installed and allow the traffic signals at the interstate ramps to be timed with the signal at the intersection of SR 211 and SR 124.

The intersection improvement project was awarded to CW Matthews Contracting Inc for an estimated contract cost of $5.2 million. The project’s completion date is April 30, 2013.
