DAHLONEGA -- Lumpkin County football is finding its groove. The Indians claimed their second straight victory on Friday, downing Madison County 34-20 in Dahlonega.
Lumpkin County (2-4, 2-1 Region 8-AAAA) led from the start, taking advantage of a long kickoff return from Austin Pierce on the opening play of the contest to set up a 1-yard scoring frun from Devonte Young.
Madison fashioned a scoring drive sparked by a long return of its own, but the Red Raiders (0-6, 0-3) missed the point after touchdown attempt and never pulled any closer.
Indians quarterback Daniel McCrary rushed for two scores and threw for a score, while Young added another touchdown run to help finish off the visitors. Jonathan Gilreath also caught key passes for the Indians.
"These kids have been so great to coach because they have just kept working and improving," Indians coach Tommy Jones said. "If you can focus on that, the scoreboard will take care of itself."
Lumpkin County will play host to Eastside next Friday.
