UNDATED - A Gwinnett County sheriff's deputy from Bethlehem has resigned after wrecking his patrol car in Walton County early Wednesday morning.

Twenty-seven-year-old Robert Christopher Matt rolled his patrol car off Georgia 81 and Double Springs Road, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Matt is charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to maintain lane and open container.

According to the responding trooper, the car ran off the road, hit an embankment and rolled several time.

Authorities said they found Matt at his home after the crash. A passenger, 27-year-old Katie Lynn of Lawrenceville, was taken from the wreck scene to Gwinnett Medical Center for treatment.

Matt was taken to the Walton County Jail. He suffered cuts, bruises and scrapes in the accident, according to the GSP.

Fox 5 News is reporting that Matt resigned from the sheriff's department a short time after his arrest.
