GAINESVILLE - The next phase of the Flat Creek Restoration Project got formal approval from the Gainesville City Council at its meeting Tuesday night.

Council members approved design expenditures for Phase Two of the project, know as the Cargill Stream Restoration Project. The firm CH2MHILL was awarded the design contract at a cost of $255,920.00. Total project cost is estimated at $394,012.00, according to the resolution approved Tuesday. The additional money would cover contigency, legal staff time and other expenses associated with the project.

City Manager Kip Padgett said that engineers will "daylight" Flat Creek, or uncover a portion of the stream, that is now basically underground.

"We're...pulling back the banks to give it more capacity to help prevent downstream flooding," said Padgett.

He said this second phase of the Flat Creek Restoration is part of Gainesville's Watershed Improvement Plan.

COUNCIL APPROVES RESOLUTION FOR JAIL PROPERTY LEASE

Council members also approved a resolution that directs the Mayor, City Manager, City Attorney and City Clerk to execute the necessary documents for the lease of the old Hall County Jail, located at 622 Main Street.

The city will lease the property to Corrections Corporation of America (CCA).

COUNCIL OKAYS PLANS TO ACQUIRE BLIGHTED PROPERTIES

The Gainesville Housing Division will proceed with the acquisition of three properties in the city under requirements of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. One property is located on Desota Street, while two are on MLK Jr. Boulevard. The properties in question are to be restored, if possible. CDBG monies are used to revitalize dilapidated properties in order to prevent blight from city landscapes.
