UNDATED - Power outages and heavy rain across North Georgia caused a number of problems for motorists on their afternoon commute Monday.

Jackson EMC Spokesperson Bonnie Jones said a tree is the cause of the Candler substation outage that occurred just before 5 p.m. She said 2,151 customers were originally without power, but it's been restored to all but 225 of those customers. It could be another couple of hours before those still without could have their power restored. Jones said the affected area includes Strickland Road, Tanners Mill Road, Ellison Farm Road and Poplar Springs Road.

Jones said the cause of that incident is unknown at this time.

Georgia Power spokesman Mark Williams said customers in the Clermont area also experienced a power outage Monday afternoon, but he said power was restored to those customers before 6 p.m.

The outages came as heavy rain pounded the region. According to Accessnorthga.com's weather page, more than two inches of rain had fallen in Gainesville by 5:30 p.m. Monday.
