9th District campaign heavy on debates in OctoberBy Katie Crumley, B.J. Williams GAINESVILLE - It's crunch time for the two candidates vying for the 9th District Congressional post.
Republican Doug Collins and Democrat Jody Cooley, both Gainesville residents, have a full slate of debates scheduled as the campaign moves into the month of October. In addition to individual appearances across the district, which encompasses all or part of 20 counties in northeast Georgia, the pair will meet in several debates throughout the month. Cooley said he looks forward to debating the issues with his opponent, who's also a friend. "We're friends now and we'll be friends when we finish, and one of us will make a good Congressman in Washington," said Cooley. And despite the 9th being a heavily conservative district, GOP candidate Doug Collins said he's not taking the race for granted. "This election is as important, and the ideas are as important, as any in Congress, and we take the Cooley campaign very seriously," said Collins.
