LOGANVILLE -- Lumpkin County broke through a four-game losing skid to knock off Walnut Grove 13-12 and earn its first victory of 2012 on Friday in Loganville.
The Indians (1-4, 1-1 Region 8-AAAA) refused to give in, completing an 80-yard touchdown march to pull ahead with just over a minute to play -- quarterback Daniel McCrary connecting on a 25-yard scoring strike to Jonathan Gilreath.
Lumpkin County's defense then stepped up, as Bradley Womack picked off a Walnut Grove pass to seal the win.
"I'm just excited for the kids," Indians coach Tommy Jones said. "They're very young and they have continued to show up and work hard in practice, and I'm glad it paid off for them tonight.
"There's something about having to learn how to finish that made this one nice."
Lumpkin County will take a bye next week before facing Madison County on Oct. 12.
