Trojans roll past Dawson in key 7-AAA game
By Jeff Hart Staff
DAWSONVILLE – North Hall was looking to get the bad taste out of its mouth from its crushing loss to Jefferson two weeks ago.
They did more than that after taking a shocking 47-14 win over Dawson County Friday night at Tiger Stadium.
“I was good to put (the Jefferson game) behind us,” North Hall coach Bob Christmas said. “I thought we came out and played a great game overall. I may think differently when I see the tape but from the sideline I liked what I saw.”
What Christmas and those in the stands saw was a patented North Hall ground attack combined with a stifling defense. The combination produced an unexpected blowout win.
“Dawson is a good team. We thought it would be a close game but we really executed well and they made some mistakes that we took advantage of,” Christmas said. “I did not expect that kind of game.”
The game was billed as a battle for the early lead in Region 7-AAA. Dawson County already owned a region win after beating East Hall in its season opener, while it was the first region game for the Trojans.
Now, North Hall (3-1, 1-0 in region) will own the tiebreaker edge over the Tigers (3-2, 1-1) and can begin setting its sights on Class AAA fourth-ranked Buford, who still figures to be the team to beat in the region.
“We’re not looking past next week against East (Hall),” Christmas said.
The Trojans used its devastating ground attack, racking up nearly 400 yards for the game, 221 coming in the first half as they scored on their first five possessions. The North Hall defense looked just as sharp holding the Tigers to just 3 total yards, one first down, and forced six punts over their first six possessions to help build a big first half lead.
After the defense forced a quick three-and-out on Dawson County, North Hall took its first drive of the game 64 yards, highlighted by one long run from T.J. Tate and another by Brad Brown on consecutive plays to get inside the Tigers 5. Zac Little capped the drive with a 1-yard TD run.
After forcing another Dawson County punt, Tate broke loose for a 55-yard run on the third play of the Trojans’ next drive to make it a 14-0 lead. North Hall would stop Dawson again and Tate would finish off a 38-yard drive with a 25-yard scamper on the second play of the second quarter for a 21-0 lead.
The Trojans would get some help on its next possession as the Dawson punter dropped the snap and was tackled at the Tigers 6. Kevin Christmas would make it 28-0 on the next play going around right end on a pitch. After another Dawson punt, North Hall would push its lead to 34-0 when Andrew Smith connected with Christmas on an 8-yard touchdown pass to cap a 45-yard drive.
The Tigers finally got their offense going late in the first half. Tyler Dominy connected with Chris Sayler on a 38-yard gain to the North Hall 10 and then capped the drive with :01 left in the half on a 10-yard run to cut the lead to 34-7 at halftime.
In the second half, North Hall continued to run the ball and Smith would cap a 59-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run for a 47-7 lead. Dawson County closed out the scoring with a late touchdown on a beautiful 44-yard strike from Dominy to Mitchell Putnam.
Christmas said the defense made huge gains after getting ripped up by Jefferson and Bryant Shirreffs two weeks ago. Dawson County came in as the highest scoring team in 7-AAA over the first four weeks.
NOTES: Dawson County was looking for its first 4-1 start since the 2005 season….The Tigers are now just 6-7 in their last 13 homes game going back to the 2010 season….North Hall is now 2-0 on the road in 2012…..The Trojans came in with the No. 2 scoring offense in the region at 36.0 ppg and nearly exceeded that in the first half.
