ELBERTON – Three men have been charged after a robbery by snatching at Ingles in Elberton on Wednesday.
Elbert County Sheriff Barry Haston said deputies responded to Ingles when a woman reported that a man robbed her by snatching her purse from the shopping cart she was using.
A description of the vehicle the man left in was given to deputies, who located the vehicle a short distance from the scene, Haston said. There were three male occupants in the vehicle.
The victim’s purse was located in the floorboard of the vehicle when a deputy approached it.
During further investigation, Haston said deputies located suspected crystal methamphetamine, smoking devices, and syringes in the vehicle.
The victim identified one of the vehicle’s occupants, 36-year-old Roger David Smith of Royston, as the man who snatched her purse. Smith was charged with robbery, possession of methamphetamine, possession and use of drug-related objects, and a parole violation.
Tony Dale Richardson, 37, of Elberton was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, possession of methamphetamine, possession and use of drug-related objects, defective tires, and window, windshield or wiper violation.
Tarrence Shaun Burney, 31, of Elberton was charged with possession of an open container of alcohol.
All three men were taken to the Elbert County Detention Center, where Richardson and Smith are awaiting bond hearings, Haston said.
