CLARKESVILLE - Medical Assisting students from North Georgia Technical College (NGTC) volunteered over 40 hours recently to assist the with the annual Baptist Mobile Health Ministry’s free dental clinic at Baldwin Baptist Church. They were accompanied by their instructors, Debra Downs and Mandy Baker.
The students screened over 135 people on Tuesday, performing vital signs, blood glucose, and hemoglobins recordings. They returned Wednesday and Thursday to perform follow-up screening for the patients with appointments.
“The students were excited and willing to demonstrate a professional approach in taking what they had been taught in class and applying it to the community,” Downs said. “Mandy and I were happy to see the self-confidence the students exhibited in performing direct patient care.”
Project Director Susan Rudeseal had asked for volunteers to assist the dentist helping with education, post care instructions, X-rays, and many other areas.
Medical Assisting is one of the nation's fastest growing careers, according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. This can be attributed to a predicted surge in the number of physicians' offices and out-patient care facilities. Technological advancements and the growing number of elderly Americans who need medical treatment are also factors for the increased demand for medical assistants.
