Johnson rallies past East Hall
By Jeff Hart Staff
RABBITTOWN – After trailing by 14 points to East Hall midway through the fourth quarter, Johnson coach Jason Roquemore decided to roll the dice three times in the final four minutes Friday night.
Roquemore first called for an onside kick, went for it on fourth-and-goal, and then went for two trailing by one point with 30 seconds left.
All three paid off after Cedric Harris ran around the right end to convert a two-point conversion to give the Knights a thrilling 22-21 win over the Vikings.
Johnson began its final possession at its own 24 with eight minutes left and used a series of short running plays to get to the East Hall 1. Dre Johnson then scored on a gutsy 4th-and-goal call that would’ve sealed the game for East Hall if not converted. That cut the East Hall lead to 21-14.
The ensuing onside kick hit a East Hall player and was recovered by Johnson at the East Hall 48. Cedric Harris did most of the work with several big runs that set Dre Johnson’s 24-yard TD pass to Jamison Owens to cut the lead to 21-20 with 30 seconds left in the game.
East Hall took a 7-0 lead on a 4-yard TD run by Edward Vergara. On Johnson’s next possession, Dre Johnson connected on a 31-yard pass to Owens that capped a 63-yard drive.
finished with 88 yards rushing on 23 carries to lead Johnson.
