Hall Co. man, ex-commissioner's son sentenced in bribery scheme
ATLANTA - A Hall County businessman and the son of a former Gwinnett County Commissioner were sentenced to 57 months in prison Tuesday for their role in a bribery and drug trafficking scheme.
Officials with the U.S. Justice Department said 66-year-old Carl "Skip" Cain of Flowery Branch and 34-year-old John Fanning of Dacula also face four years of supervised release.
The two, along with Fanning's mother Shirley Lasseter, admitted to accepting money in exchange for Lasseter's vote on a real estate development.
Lasseter and Cain accepted thousands of dollars in cash last year from an undercover FBI agent posing as a businessman. Fanning was promised a 50 percent stake in a pawn shop that was to be part of the project.
The agent told the three he was involved in drug trafficking, and Fanning and Cain made it clear to him that they would like to get involved with that.
Lasseter was sentenced to 33 months in prison earlier this month.
