Piedmont volleyball extends winning streak to six matches
DEMOREST -– The Piedmont College volleyball team extended its winning streak to six matches with a pair of non-conference victories over LaGrange College and Covenant College Saturday in Cave Arena. PC downed LC 3-0 before capping the day with a hard-fought 3-2 win over the Scots.
In the opening victory over LaGrange, PC handled the visiting Panthers 25-14, 25-19, 25-21. Six different players recorded at least four kills for the Lions, highlighted by nine from Courtney Bradshaw and eight from Kaitlin Norman, who also posted a team-high nine digs. Katheryn Knarr (16) and Ashley Fannon (13) combined for 29 assists.
Despite LC being a member of the USA South Athletic Conference, the match was played as a non-conference match with the head-to-head in league standings scheduled for October 24 in LaGrange.
In the second match, Piedmont downed the Scots (7-3) 23-25, 25-17, 25-23, 22-25 and 15-11. Norman again posted the team-high in kills with 13, while Jennifer Opper and Mallory Leary pitched in with 12 apiece. Knarr (29) and Xandy Green (24) combined for 53 assists, while Katie Byrd (19) and Norman (18) tallied 37 digs.
After a PC timeout leading 8-7, the Lady Lions reeled off five of the next six points to ice the win and finish the match on a 7-4 run. The match with Covenant marked only the second time through 11 matches that the Lady Lions had extended past three sets. PC is now 1-1 in five-setters and 8-1 in matches that only last three.
The sweep wraps up a six-match home stand for the Lady Lions, who will return to action on Tuesday, Sept.18, when the team travels to Rome to take on NAIA Shorter University.
