DAHLONEGA -– The 11th-ranked North Georgia women’s soccer team took advantage of the misfortune of a few other teams in the conference Saturday night and claimed a 4-0 victory over Peach Belt Conference newcomer Young Harris at the North Georgia Soccer Field in their league-opener.
The Saints improved to 7-0 for the season and began their PBC campaign 1-0 as they dealt the Mountain Lions their first loss of the season to move Young Harris to 4-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
Elsewhere in the league, No. 24 Armstrong Atlantic State University took down No. 4 Columbus State with a 1-0 victory, giving the Saints an early boost in the conference and region race.
Just three minutes into the game, Megan Morrow scored the first goal of the game and her first of the season as the ball bounced around in the box off a deflected shot.
Almost exactly 10 minutes later, Kelly Penston scored her third goal of the season as Emily Bowen fed her the ball at the top of the box Penston then deftly placed the ball into the back of the net to put the Saints up 2-0.
Caroline Wallace capped the first half scoring for North Georgia as she cleaned up a free kick from Morrow. Morrow, a sophomore defender, had quite the game in the conference-opener as she recorded a second assist in the second half when Sophia Matonak scored in the 54th-minute.
North Georgia dominated the game in every aspect of the game, out-shooting the Mountain Lions 27-8 as the Saints worked to keep pressure on Young Harris’ goalkeeper, Taylor Erickson. Erickson was forced to make 12 saves while reining PBC Goalkeeper-of-the-Week Mallory Sayre only had to make five saves to record her fifth shutout of the season.
Head coach Chris Adams continued his trend of getting as many players into the game as possible as 22 total players logged minutes for North Georgia in the 4-0 victory.
The Saints will continue their three-game homestand next week with a 1:00 p.m. PBC match against Georgia College on Saturday, Sept. 22.
