Gainesville football may be known for its all-out offensive attack -- but make no mistake the Red Elephants’ success of the past few years is based on a defensive unit that is just as aggressive as its offensive counterpart.
For proof look no further than Friday, when Gainesville held Buford’s imposing ground game to less than 70 yards rushing and limited the Wolves to just 15 points as the Red Elephants pulled out a 19-15 victory on the road -- in the process handing Buford its first home loss since 2006 and its first regular season home defeat since 2000.
For its efforts in Friday’s win, the Gainesville defense has been named the Gainesville Jaycees Player of the Week.
The Red Elephants may not feature the biggest defense in class AAAAA, but Gainesville swarms to the ball in a hurry and, after a disappointing week one performance in a 32-30 loss to West Forsyth, the Red Elephants gained a large measure of redemption in week two.
Access North Georgia sports editor Morgan Lee recently caught up with two leaders of the unit to present the award and talk about the Big Red ‘D.’

Each week this football season the Jaycees will team with Jacobs Media to present a Player of the Week award. At the end of the season, the Jaycees will also present a Player of the Year award, as well as name a recipient of a $2,500 scholarship to the most deserving senior.
