CLEVELAND - The White County Board of Commissioners has approved a contract with Scroggs and Grizzel of Gainesville to do the expansion project at the countyís senior center in Cleveland.

Scroggs and Grizzel was selected from nine received bid proposals. The total cost for the project is no more than $618,000.

Senior Center Director Bonnie York said construction can not begin soon enough.

"Itís got to the point weíre so crowed itís difficult to serve the people. Itís kind of dangerous when you have several in wheel-chairs and walkers getting around. We had 63 the other day," York said.

During the construction, the center has been offered the use of some area churches, according to York.

Commission Chairman Travis Turner said officials want to put the project on the fast track.

"Time is of the essence. Itís September now. We need to be breaking ground ASAP, because winter is just ahead of us, we donít want to be building this in the middle of winter, itís not smart," Turner said.

Turner admitted during Mondayís meeting that due to the growing senior population in the county, the expansion is not the permanent solution for the center's needs. It wonít be long before they'll be looking for another location, according to Turner.
