HOLLYWOOD – A Lumpkin County man died as a result of injuries suffered in a two-vehicle wreck that occurred on Georgia Highway 15/U.S. 441 at Antioch Church Road near Hollywood Saturday morning.
Robert Gordon Hester, 66, of Dahlonega died Saturday night at Greenville Memorial Hospital in South Carolina, where he had been airlifted from the scene, Habersham County Coroner Kasey McEntire confirmed.
Hester was a passenger in a mini-van that was struck in the passenger side while attempting to cross the southbound lanes of Georgia 15/U.S. 441 on Antioch Church Road at 11:02 a.m.
According to Cpl. Mike Hopkins of the Georgia State Patrol, the mini-van failed to yield to a Buick that was traveling south.
The Buick struck the passenger side of the van, sending the van off the road, down an embankment, and through some brush. The car then spun around and came to rest on Antioch Church Road.
Georgia 15/U.S. 441 was shut down in both directions at times to allow two separate medical helicopters to land at the scene and pick up the two most critical patients.
Two other injured persons were taken by ground ambulance for treatment.
The wreck was cleared about 12:45 p.m.
Names of others involved in the wreck remain unavailable.
Funeral services for Hester will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Barrett Funeral Home Chapel in Cleveland.
