Counselors assisting in Banks County following tragedies
By Rob Moore Editor
HOMER – A group of counselors from throughout the Banks County School System, and from mental health agencies across Banks County and the area, are at Banks County High School to help students and staff cope with the weekend deaths of two students.
“As school resumed Monday following the tragic event that occurred on Aug. 24, the students, staff, parents, and the community pulled together as a family to support each other,” a statement issued by the school system states. “The outpouring of support from the community and agencies across the state is effectively assisting the school system cope in a time of need.”
“We also had the high school open for counseling on Saturday from 1-4 p.m.,” said Banks County Assistant School Superintendent Donna Reed. “We will continue throughout the week and days to come to be sensitive to ours students’ needs. We will also make sure counseling is available at the other schools, particularly the middle school, where two siblings of the deceased student attend.”
Banks County School Superintendent Chris Erwin praised the school’s response to Friday’s self-inflicted gunshot incident at BCHS, which prompted a six-hour lockdown.
“I commend the heroic actions taken by all staff members and reporting agencies,” Erwin said. “The students showed maturity and compassion as the investigation progressed.”
Any Banks County parent who wants to ensure that his or her child receives services from a counselor or who has questions as a parent should call Banks County High School at (706) 677-2221.
“Please continue to keep our students, staff, and community in your thoughts and prayers,” Erwin said. “Everyone in the school extends condolences to the student’s family at this very difficult time. Our prayers and thoughts are with them, as well as with the family of the student who died from injuries sustained in a car accident last week.”
