CLAYTON - The embattled Boggs Mountain Animal Shelter announced this week that it will close in October. Now, the challenge is finding homes for the animals that are housed at the shelter.

A volunteer who answered the phone at the shelter in Rabun County Friday said there are about 30 animals that need to be adopted before the doors close this fall. An adoption event is scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. outside the Clayton Wal-Mart on U.S. 441.

The shelter came under fire after an investigative report by Fox 5 News in Atlanta found that shelter director Peanut Kilby had been taking donations to keep healthy pets alive, but had instead authorized the euthanization of those sponsored pets. Some donors to the Lucky Dog program told the TV station that they had received letters claiming their sponsored pets had been adopted when, in fact, they had been put down.

The shelters board of directors announced this week that lack of donations forced them to make the decision to close the facility.
