OAKWOOD - Gainesville Fire officials Friday said it was a malfunction in some electrical components of a paint booth that started a fire in the Oakwood area early Wednesday.

"The fire then spread to some connecting ductwork and exhaust removal systems," Fire Chief Jon Canada said.

Canada said the fire inside the Sapa extrusion plant had the facility evacuated for over five hours for the mop-up and investigation. Fire crews responded around 7:00 a.m. Wednesday, had extinguished the blaze by 7:30 a.m. and turned the building back over to the company shortly after 1:00 p.m.

No one was injured in the blaze off Old Oakwood Road.

Canada said they're still working on a dollar damage estimate.
