The Roy Head Post 16 of the American Legion held a flag disposal ceremony Wednesday.
CLEVELAND - As part of their annual Fourth of July activities, the Roy Head Post 16 of the American Legion held a flag disposal ceremony at the post home south of Cleveland Wednesday.

According to the Flag Code, any American flag that is worn, damaged or tattered beyond repair should be retired in a respectful and dignified manner. The preferred method is burning.

The ceremony included lowering the flag that has flown in front of the post home for the past year and raising a new flag.

Post Commander Mike Allen said this is one of the highlights of this patriotic day.

"Things like this really, to me, brings out patriotism in some people that you donít realize that they are patriotic,Ē said Allen.

A large crowd was on hand to observe the ceremony, including members of Troupe 48 of the Boys Scouts of America.

James Roach, post charter representative with the boy scouts, said the scouts not only participate in this event but also place American flags on veterans' graves on Memorial Day.

Afternoon activities included hot dogs, watermelon cutting and bluegrass music.
