BUFORD - Hall County fire investigators believe carbon monoxide sickened 10 people on a houseboat in the Sunset Cove area of Lake Lanier.

Firefighters responded to the boat around 8:00 Wednesday morning to find people with various symptoms of nausea, vomiting and headache.

Hall County Fire Chief David Kimbrell said the occupants of the boat were lucky that they woke up.

"We're very fortunate in this particular instance," said Kimbrell. "I believe they had spent the night at a dock there near the Sunset Cove area."

Sunset Cove is located at Lake Lanier Islands.

Kimbrell said usually the culprit in emitting carbon monixide on a boat is a generator, although he said investigators are still working to determine exactly what happened. He said firefighters used CO monitors when they arrived and detected high levels of the gas on board.

Eight of the 10 occupants of the houseboat, three adults and five children, were initially taken to the hospital by ambulance, according to Kimbrell.

A ninth person was later taken for observation.
