Arrest made in Towns Co. shooting, victim airlifted

HIAWASSEE - A Young Harris man has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault in the shooting of a 66-year-old man in Towns County early Wednesday morning.

According to the Towns County Sheriff's Office, units responded to the Plott Town area where they discovered the victim in the backyard of the residence suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the chest.

Officials said he was airlifted to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Authorities said 59-year-old William Hampton remains in the Towns County Detention Center.
