GAINESVILLE - The outgoing president of Gainesville State College now has an academic building named in her honor.

College officials announced Wednesday that the Academic IV Building at the school's Oakwood campus has been officially renamed the Martha T. Nesbitt Academic Building.

Nesbitt's retirement goes into effect at the end of the month ahead of a merger of the school with North Georgia College and State University as part of a plan by the Georgia Board of Regents to cut costs.

“I don’t know what to say, this is so unexpected... I’m just blown away," Nesbitt said. "This is one of the biggest surprises of my life and I am truly honored.”

A formal naming ceremony for the Martha T. Nesbitt Academic Building will be held at the College on Aug. 1.
