Arrest follows Habersham chase
By Rob Moore
DEMOREST – A Cornelia man was arrested following a vehicle pursuit in Habersham County Tuesday night.
According to Deputy Jourdan McKay, Daniel Irvin LaCount, 29, of Cornelia was arrested after a chase through Cornelia and Demorest.
“We were investigating a crime that occurred on Roadside Drive” off Pea Ridge Road, McKay said.
McKay said an agent from the Mountain Judicial Circuit Narcotics Criminal Investigation and Suppression Team went to the residence to do a follow-up and, as he arrived, he met a vehicle leaving at a high rate of speed.
“I was on the telephone with him [the agent],” McKay said.
The agent followed the male in the speeding vehicle, observing him run stop signs, McKay said.
The vehicle left the Roadside Drive home and traveled up Pea Ridge Road, turned right onto Old Cleveland Road, and turned left onto J Warrent Road.
The agent then followed the car through the parking lot of Kmart and Big Lots in Cornelia, before the vehicle entered Business Highway 441 toward Demorest. McKay said he made contact with the car on Business Highway 441 at Cannon Bridge Road.
“I had my lights and sirens activated,” McKay said. “He was northbound and passing cars on the wrong side of the road, throwing items out of the vehicle. Those items included scales and syringes.”
“Due to the high population of Demorest at that time of day and Piedmont College, the agent from NCIS passed me and passed [the suspect] and got in front of him and got him stopped.”
Following a brief struggle, LaCount was taken into custody by McKay and the NCIS agent, McKay said.
“[LaCount] has pending traffic and drug charges,” McKay said.
