RABBITTOWN – Jamond Witt set the tone early and then helped carry East Hall to a 35-14 win over Rabun County Friday night in both teams’ Region 8A-AA opener at East Hall Stadium.

Witt capped the Vikings first drive with a nifty 35-yard scoring run en route to 143 yards and two touchdowns to pace a punishing East Hall ground game. The Vikings (3-2, 1-0 Region 8N-AA) piled up more than 250 yards rushing in the first half while building a 28-7 halftime lead. They finished with nearly 400 yards rushing for the game.

Witt also had a 44-yard punt return to set up another East Hall touchdown and caught one pass for 19 yards.

The Wildcats (2-3, 0-1) nearly set the tone to begin the game returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown, but it was called back on a penalty. The East Hall defense then flexed its muscles sacking Rabun quarterback Wes Holcombe on two of the first three plays to set up the Vikings first drive.

After both teams traded punts the next two possessions, East Hall would push its lead to 14-0 when Witt scored on a short run to cap a 95-yard drive.

Rabun County would cut the lead to 14-7 on its next possession when Holcombe connected with Dylan Blakely on a 39-yard touchdown pass. But East Hall would respond when quarterback Cameron Davis scrambled 65 yards on the first play of the ensuing drive for a 21-7 lead.

The Wildcats fortunes turned worse when they fumbled the following kickoff. East Hall would capitalize four plays later with Austen Mahaffey scoring on a 2-yard run to make it 28-7 at halftime.

The Vikings defense never let the Wildcats get untracked sacking Holcomb seven times in the first half alone. Holcombe would connect with Blakely on another late TD pass to make it the final score.
