ATLANTA - Authorities say a construction worker from Gainesville is dead after he fell 20 feet while working on project at an Atlanta high school.
Fulton County officials identified the worker as 31-year-old Carlos Rivera-Garcia. Authorities say Rivera-Garcia was working on a $29 million addition to Benjamin E. Mays High School in southwest Atlanta on Saturday afternoon when a metal pipe came loose from the ceiling and struck the lift holding the worker.
Authorities say the impact caused Rivera-Garcia to fall onto the pavement.
The construction site has been temporarily shut down until federal officials can investigate the accident. Officials said Rivera-Garcia worked for Shumate Air Conditioning and Heating in Duluth.
