GAINESVILLE - Gainesville State College (GSC) and Georgia Perimeter College (GPC) have entered in to an Articulation Agreement that will allow students in GPC’s Sign Language Interpreting program a seamless transfer to Gainesville State College.

Beginning in the fall of 2011, participating students would earn both an Associate Degree from Georgia Perimeter and a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services Delivery and Administration (HSDA BA) from Gainesville State. The HSDA focuses on service provision that improves or maintains the quality of life for community members. The baccalaureate degree prepares students for careers in government, social services, business and non-profit organizations.

“This program addresses demand in the region to produce trained professionals to serve growing community needs. In addition, it provides students with an excellent and affordable degree that has broad applicability in terms of career options,” said Dr. Jessica Ziembroski, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Gainesville State.

The career opportunities in Human Services are generally classified into four service categories: information or advising services such as libraries, museums and hotlines; maintenance services such as civil service and public welfare programs; personal services such as counseling; and protection services such as public health, criminal justice, and social services. The “Georgia Department of Labor Workforce Trends: Employment Projections to 2014” reports that six of the industries projected to grow the fastest are in the healthcare, human services, and social assistance sector; Human Services Management is included on the list of Georgia’s “HOT” jobs of the future requiring Bachelor’s Degrees.

“The agreement is a win-win for both schools,” said Dr. Pamela Elfenbein, Interim Dean for the School of Social Sciences at Gainesville State. “An entirely different culture is arriving from Georgia Perimeter, and we are excited. We look forward to the endless learning opportunities presented by this venture and look forward to cultivating this culture of cooperation,” she said.
GPC President Anthony Tricoli said of the new agreement, “As the largest provider of transfer students in the University System, we are happy to offer this additional, very important opportunity to our students.”
