GAINESVILLE – Wauka Mountain Elementary School held a Veterans Appreciation Ceremony Wednesday afternoon in the school gymnasium.
The ceremony included the presentation of colors by the White County Color Guard and a medley of songs by the North Georgia College and State University Patriot Choir.
The keynote speaker was Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, who told students to serve their country and put others before themselves.
“You serve your country by serving your community and others and by not putting yourself first but putting others first - that’s the message,” said Lt. Gov. Cagle.
Cagle added that we owe deep appreciation to veterans because they paid the ultimate sacrifice for our liberty and freedom.
U.S. Rep. Nathan Deal of Gainesville, an Army veteran, when students are of the age to serve their country they should do so.
“We owe a great debt of gratitude to those who served our country in the past. When you come of the age when you're eligible to serve, I would certainly encourage...that. It is something (you) will never regret,” said Deal.
The students also lined the halls at the end of the ceremony for a “Walk of Honor,” which was their way of showing the veterans respect and honor.
