(Cleveland)- White County voters, by a wide margin, approved the continuation of the one percent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax for education Tuesday. Results from the voting 1,406 said yes, while 764 said no. That’s 64 percent to 35 percent.
Dr. Paul Shaw, Superintendent of Schools told us he was happy for all those who benefit from the win. White County Election Superintendent Garrison Baker said 16-point 3 percent of the county’s 13,375 active registered voters cast ballots.
White County resident Howard Miller who helped spearhead an campaign urging citizens to vote no on the referendum said last night, no matter the outcome it was good to see people express their views.
Helen City Commission election result: There were five candidates seeking one of the three seats on the council. Jack Champagne will serve another term on the council he received 94 of the 121 votes cast. Helen Wilkins will also serve another term she received 88 votes, and newcomer Judy Holloway was elected with 79 votes.
There were two other candidates that did not get the votes need to be elected. Lynn Whitener got 55 votes and Donny Simonds got 8 votes.
